I must be missing something. I copied and pasted that code into my script, commented everything else out and it comes back with nothing.

could be shell scoping problems.... i see this every so often because i'm working
exclusively on Solaris.

That worked!

My only problem is that I don't have that line of text as a fixed variable, so how would I now extract it from a text file into the variable named string instead of using my existing code:

Sorry, I feel like I'm making you do all the work - I am trying to manipulate the code I have but I am not familiar with cat/grep/sed as yet.
