3. The USB stick evidently does not need to be bootable it is simply adding writable storage to the Linux already installed in the router.
4. Using a USB stick for swap on a system that has enough memory such that it does not use swap is okay is it not? This is assuming Linux is like Solaris and does keep a copy of memory in swap all the time but only:
1. Uses swap when the OS is actually low on memory.
2. Swap out a process in memory has not been used for a long time (in which case it will get swapped out but may not need swapping back in if the copy in memory is still resident)?
Linux embedded device is low on memory 32MB, as I remember well,
so swap partition on a more usb stick is required.
Yesterday called Asus support line, asking about Asus Eee coming with Linux as OS and SSD, replacing HDD, trying to learn if swap partition is served by SSD or not.
And if yes, what problems are generated , if any, as SSD and usb stick flash memory come from the same line of flash memory products.
Waited 5 minutes and the first answer was, SSD was supposed to be soldered into platine of mainboard.
Wrong answer.
Asked again.
After another 5-10 minutes the answer was - Eee coming with SSD running Linux could afford 8 years of error-free service.
So if Asus is so lucky with SSD and Linux OS, what is your idea to replace
