Are you saying that you deleted /usr directory on your box?

If so, restore from backup is going to be your solution.

Deleted usr

Hi
I normally backup with tar command but after deleting the usr folder, the tar command wouldn't work. Now I want to just start the server but it wouldn't startup.
I can get a backup from a similar server but I don't do a scratch installation which would delete data I have on the server.

tar is in /usr on a lot of systems, so it's probably gone too. The boot process probably needs a few tools from /usr as soon as it can be sure that it's available.
IMO, your best bet is probably to boot from a rescue medium (eg Linux Live-CD), use that to backup any leftover data, reinstall and then restore.
Lessons learned:
  1. Always keep your backup current
  2. Always check your commands before you hit enter
  3. Always test on a expendable system first

Suggest you log a call with Sun.
The skeleton unix environment when booted from a release kit is quite versatile.
Sun support once guided me through copying the root partition across the LAN from a clone server.
Others may disagree but I'm not convinced that you can restore a system partition from a tar backup. Unix dump/restore works for me when there is no proprietary backup software.
