UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi,

Currently in my company, we are using Windows 2003 server and Exceed. Team from India can connect to the Windows 2003 server and start Exceed to run their UNIX application. The application is GUI based.

As you know, Windows 2003 only allows two connection at any time. so I want to upgrade to some Linux server. My concern:

1. I have the hardware ready to go, should I go with CENTOS. or maybe Ubuntu. Not sure if I should enterprise or desktop version.

2. Basically, I just need the users from India to connect to here and start their x-window. The reason I am doing this is because of firewall, they can't connect directly to production server.

Please advice, which is the best way. Thanks.

It is not easy to run X-Window client server applications over many router hops and a firewall.

How many total hops are between the clients and the server?

Thanks for your respond Neo. But it's working fine now on Windows 2003, only reason I want to upgarde is because of limitations on Windows. Company doesn't want to pay for more license.

You think it will work??

You should be OK, since Exceed is working. Normally today folks run X11 protocol forwarding through an SSH (Secure Shell) tunnel.

Either OS you mention is OK, but go with the Enterprise versions if they have them.
