I will see which method fits for each individual package I'm installing. Thx, you're very helpful.
Glad to help!

Noatun/kaboodle playing MP3s had serious jitter and XMMS played them with the wrong tone (just like a vinyl record playing at a wrong speed) that I'd found it better to mute the sound card as it's too hard for my ears, although the blocking problem is indeed solved as advertised. Possibly VSC may work with a better sound card, but I don't know. My experience is not an acceptable one so I set it back to defaults.
I thought I would follow up on this issue. I just setup the vchan settings on my A7N8X Deluxe MB with ALC650 AC97 codec chip and I did not experience any problems like you did with the vchan settings and I was able to play multiple audio streams using both arts and esd under KDE3.

If so inclined I would check out getting an add on sound card based on the CMedia CMI 8738 chipset. I had this chipset on my Soyo Dragon Plus! MB and was very surprised with the 4 channel support with the pcm driver for FreeBSD.

My A7N8X Deluxe MB uses the pcm driver as well but I do not get the 4 channel support that the CMI 8738 chipset got with the same exact driver. I believe this sound card can be had for as little as USD $10.

I also believe that as virtual sound support is mentioned in the Handbook it should be a feature that is rather well tested and supported. Seems like my onboard sound card is a quite problematic one as it is also not well supported on Windows 2000+. It works satisfactorily only on SuSE Linux at all.

Thanks for your advice. I'd better get a new soundcard then.
