ReDirecting a URL to another URL - Linux

Hello,

I need to redirect an existing URL, how can i do that?

There's a current web address to a GUI that I have to redirect to another webaddress. Does anyone know how to do this?

This is on Unix boxes Linux.

example:

https://m45.testing.address.net/host.php

make it so the above link, when clicked on, will redirect users to:

https://production.address.net/host.php

thanks

SkySmart,

There is an option in a web server call "Redirect". You can check it out.

Im assuming that your using Apache as your web server( Edit the httpd.conf and look for the directive " Redirect")

Cheers!

I think what you suggested applies to redirecting pages.

What i want to do is redirect an entire server.

m45.testing.address.net/host.php is a server that is being decommissioned.

production.address.net/host.php is the server that is taking the place of m45.testing.address.net

so i want all traffic that are hitting m45 to be redirected to production.address.net/host.php

any help is appreciated. thank you

That's done largely outside the server. The biggest step is actually getting the URLs to point to the correct IP address. That's a DNS thing, and is probably somewhat outside the scope of this site. To summarize, though, change the IP address for the "production" address to whatever the addy for the new server is. Then, the message is at least getting to the right doorstep, so to speak. Then, make sure that the old URL is listed as an alias in the http.conf (or whatever the control file is for whatever http server you're using).

As a matter of communicating clearly with your site visitors, I'd also suggest looking up how to 1) rewrite the old to the new one in the user's browser and 2) make sure that the site clearly advertises the change.
