Old HDD copy to new HDD ? im lost...

Over the last few months the HDD spins louder and louder, so I fiqured its time to replace the HDD. Its been running 24/7/365 since 98 Smilie. yes i said since 98 Smilie

I have an IBM system 43P Model 240. 233 MHz. running AIX Version 4.

The current HDD is an IBM DGHS COMP IEC -950
FRU PN# 59h6926 9.10 GB SCSI 68 pin.

I now have a new 68 SCSI IBM HDD same Part Number as before. Smilie

However I have only used the software that runs on this PC, and I do not know anythin about UNIX / AIX.

So I would like some help on how to get the information off of the old HDD onto the new HDD. cloneing?

I have read some posts about a dd command?

But also read somewhere esle about mounting the device. Which is all greek to me. I have built PCs, but I have always been with Windows.

Hopefully you can help me out before this HDD decides to stop working.

-Thanks in advance Smilie

One last thing, How do I exit out of the program that runs on AIX. Im always on the console login. Is there a command.

Like I said this Entire AIX / UNIX shell is all greek to me.

FYI: this is a IBM RS/6000 model as well.

-Thanks in advance

if you have other system as unix, you can configure nfs on master box( year 98) and mount that nfs partition on other system and copy data locally after mounting.

you can also use scp, rsync tools to transfer data from master server. in case of more information how to do it please ping me on nilesh_patil82@yahoo.com

Hi.

Just use the standard AIX LVM tools. The old HDD is probably called hdisk0 (see by issuing lspv) and if you simply insert the new one you will have hdisk1 (etc) for that one. Then extend the volume group and issue migratepv command. If this is a rootvg disk you will need to do bosboot & bootlist commands and your done.

Thanks I will try that. Smilie

However what about the jumper settings, going off of memory the current hard drive is using the 2nd from the far end near the corner of the hard drive. which is SCSI ID BIT 2 connecting it to ground? On the new hard drive should the jumpers match when connecting to the PC. or should it be different? Smilie

Thanks again
