Cloned Sun OS 10 HD using replicator machine

Dear all,

I have Sun Oracle 10 SPARC T4-1 machine with 4 units SAS2 300GB configure with 2 set Raid1.
Is it possible to take out all 4 hd and cloned the 4 HD using disk clone/replicator machine with same HD size and model?

After the cloned completed put back the new cloned HD at original bay.

Did this cloned method will work?

Thanks
AYY

Reading your question I wonder why on earth you would want to do this. What are you trying to achieve???????

You have 2 pairs of disks in RAID1 which I assume is a hardware RAID using the T4-1 in-built RAID controller?
Are these arrays created with raidctl or sas2ircu? I assume raidctl because I don't think sas2ircu was supported until the T4-3 boxes.

Or is this a software RAID setup?

Anyway, if it's a RAID1 then there should be a supported way of pulling out one of the legs (on a quiescent system) and replacing it with a new drive and triggering a RAID rebuild (also known as resilvering) and allowing the RAID controller to do all the replication work for you.

To an extent, I could understand if you wanted to replicate to bigger disks but you say that you want to replicate to the same make/model/size of disk. Why???? What are you thinking???

Please post the output of:

Code:
# raidctl -l

And....of course, be professional. Before you pull any disks out make sure you have a full backup in case anything goes wrong.

Hi Hicksd8,

Since the box and apps installed by vendor, the apps will not have any update and OS for 15 year and we need to pay the apps software support around 30k euro per year although no issue for last 5 year.
We plan to cancel the support but we afraid the apps corrupted or someone accidentally delete the apps file.
We did have support for hardware with oracle.

I just need the easiest way to bring up the machine if anything happen to the apps.
Did my suggestion method for disk cloning will work?

Below is the HD mirroring setting and hware info.

The best thing you can do in this situation is a full backup to tape or, over the network, to a NFS handle.

You imply that you fear a disk failure but you already have RAID1 so you can tolerate a disk failure and simply replace the drive. You have other more worrying single points of failure e.g. the processor and/or motherboard, or power supply unit.

Hardware is worthless and data is priceless. You need a full data backup to give yourself an option of recovery.
Shutting down the system, removing disks, replicating them, and then rebooting the system all has its dangers.
I recommend that you leave the system running and export all data (ZFS pools) over the network to another machine using NFS.
You could even do this to two different machines and then backup those backups.
In the event of a major failure you can find a way to recover if you have the data and you have no chance if you don't.
Don't interfere with the system at all until you have a full backup.
