I wouldn't bother trying to find another Xeon mb. the vast majority of socket 478 and 775 systems will run SCO. as long as any SATA controller can be set to legacy IDE mode you should be fine. Use an add in network card, and preferably a PS2 keyboard.
I believe though that your current issue is with the installation of rs506, caused by a corrupted file in the /etc/conf directories; not corrupted enough to cause the kernel re-link to fail, but enough to prevent the new kernel from booting. Also if you have re-linked the kernel more than once then unix.old no longer represents the system state as it was just before rs506 was installed. ie every time you re-link the kernel, unix is moved to unix.old.

I guess it's good that I have retained the habit of never throwing anything away. I found an old 1U rack server with a SuperMicro mb model X7XBI, that has a 775 socket. I first tried installing my "new" hard drive with the recent O/S installation, and after making a few changes in the BIOS for the SATA config, there were no problems booting up!! I tried to do some changes with the mouse configuration because I still have no mouse working in the GI, but I really don't care about that. So then I installed my old hard drive with the working legacy app and everything booted up normally. Now it appears that the only hangup I have is with the NIC, and I want to see if there is any way to fix that. I have a PCI-Express slot in the server, but I did not spend the time to see if I have a separate NIC that will fit. The specs for the old mb say that I was using an Intel PRO100 (Intel 82550PM) LAN controller, and that is what still shows up in "scoadmin network" settings. The SuperMicro specs say that on this mb the LAN is Intel 82573V or 82573L. Is there going to be any way to add this new LAN card to my settings and get it to work? If someone can walk me through the steps, I would really appreciate it! I am excited to have come this far with equipment I already had.

Run netconfig, and delete the NIC, then add it again. The problem is that the driver loads the PCI data at the install time, not boot time, so that when you (effectively) move the card from one slot to another, the driver doesn't find the card.

@jgt - Still no joy with the NIC. When I first deleted the NIC that was in there, I noted it was Intel PRO/100 / PRO/100+, but I did not check any of the other settings. (oops) Now whenever I go to add a new LAN adapter, and select the one listed above, I have options to enter these: PCI Bus#, Device#, Function#. I have no idea if there was anything in those settings before, or if I need any. I do know that when it boots up, the config for PCI shows "nodes=0", and then at the end of showing the config it says "PCI Scan failed". Note that this is the Onboard Intel NIC, which was the same on the old mb, is it still considered PCI? I also get this message popping up after I login: "Portmapper on Server (my IP) is not responding" which I think is telling me that networking is not working - just FYI. Any ideas what I should do to fix this issue?

Does the bios report the configuration of the PCI devices during POST. Some bios show a list of the devices with 3 columns of numbers. if you have this, then those are the bus, device and function. If not, you may have to install a windows operating system, and then go to control panel ->network sharing ->'local area connection status' -> general to see the same information.

I had to install a spare disk and then install Windows XP to find out the Bus settings for the onboard LAN ports, but I did it. Now I know what those settings are, so I installed a new LAN adapter in SCO, and it still isn't quite working. I think there is progress, because when I tried to ping out before I would get the message that the "destination" was not reachable. Now when I ping out it says "no route to host". In the netconfig settings I don't see where to enter the Gateway and DNS server IPs, like I remember entering during a clean install. Could this be the remaining issue? Can you tell me where to enter that info? Thanks!

The gateway address (labeled as default router) is the last line in the same netconfig window that sets the ip address.
the name server is set in /etc/resolv.conf.
Code:
-bash-3.2# cat resolv.conf
domain local.com
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 142.77.2.36
hostresorder local bind
search local.com
-bash-3.2#
