OK, so I found that if I wait a few minutes the route table does populate, as shown in attachment number 1. However, the VM still cannot ping out, as shown in attachment number 2, but still replies to incoming pings. Any other suggestions? Thanks
The AMD network adapter was "auto-detected" at installation, and I configured all of the IP addresses that were available to enter at setup (gateway, primary DNS, etc.). It is entirely possible that I may have changed something in network settings since then and somehow the kernel didn't get relinked. I know it often asks if I want to relink the kernel, use the new kernel by default, and rebuild (maybe) the kernel environment - and I usually say "yes" to all of those options. Is that the correct answer to all of those? Is there a way to go through the relinking now without changing anything? Thanks.
Yes, the usual response is 'yes' to those questions.
You should recheck your network adapter configuration (using netconfig).
If you change anything (other than ip addresses) then relink the kernel.

Procedure to relink the kernel manually
Login as root
Answer questions referred to above
Wait for return to # prompt
Reboot the system to bring up the new kernel

So, I thought I had figured it out - on the most recent VM I had forgotten to install the supplemental software that came on CD 5.0.6a. But after I did that it still wouldn't ping out. I decided maybe to give it another shot with a brand-new VM, brand-new install of 5.0.6, with the immediate installation of the supplemental software on 5.0.6a. I made some entries in the /etc/hosts file. I still can't ping out from the VM. It still does reply to pings. I SWEAR this was not a problem a few days ago when I set up my first VM attempt, I know it was working correctly and now it is not. This leads me to believe that I am getting older and probably did something then that I have forgotten now. I will continue to try and Google for answers, but if anyone on this forum has more ideas, I would surely appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!
