Data shutting down 5.7 on Intel: failed to write of utmpx entry
When shutting down a freshly installed version of 5.7 on a Compaq server I get two messages:

INIT: failed to write of utmpx entry: "s0"

and:

INIT: failed to write of utmpx entry: "fw"

then I can continue with the shutdown. When I bring the system back up it has not saved any of my desktop settings that I made before shutdown.

The errors are no big deal - more than likely the file system that the utmpx file is normally on has been dismounted for the reboot. You are getting the errors as one of the last parts before the system is down, correct?


(Something like this)
Print services already stopped.
The system is down.

INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:"s5"

INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:"of"
syncing file systems... done


As far as your desktop, save it, exit, log back in. No reboot is needed.

You are correct. I get: The system is down.
Then the statements I wrote above.
Then:

syncing files systems... done

I am getting error in a shell script having a simple date command. Error is " write to 1 failed ". We saw that /tmp folder was 100% full. I had a drive go bad. I have replaced the drive and have my system up. I have a 1-to-1 mirror raid. My mirrored boot drive brings the system up. I issued a reboot command. The system comes up gives me a login prompt and generates the error: failed write of utmpx entry:"i2". What is i2? (1 Reply)
