Question Solaris 8 - SUNWcsr cluster missing/corrupt ?

Hi all

I'm currently trying to install OpenSSH on a number of servers and for the most part succeeding. Unfortunately one of the Sun V880 servers is complaining when I try to install the /dev/random (entropy) patch (112438-01) needed for the SSH keys. Error below....

(ignore 'the patch has already been applied' I've done patchrm and patchadd again)

Checking installed patches...
ERROR: information for "SUNWcsr.*" was not found
Patch 112438-01 has already been applied.
See patchadd(1M) for instructions.

It seems that SUNWcsr is no longer on the box - can it have become corrupt ? It must have been on the box when I installed the Recommended patch list

This seems to be the crux of the problem or is it that patch 112438-01 has been superceded ?

Am I able to re-install the SUNWcsr package without downtime or do I need to go for a system rebuild Smilie

Many thx for all replies
Brett

Since you ask about system downtime, I would assume you did not add any of the patches in single-user mode?

Anytime you have to add a patch, you must check that it does or does not change the kernel. If it does not, then you can probably add it in multi-user mode while the system is quiet. Otherwise, you MUST bring the system to single-user (normally best to go all the way down and back up to single-user).

You may come back and say "But it worked fine on all the other systems." And at times, you can get away with it but it will always bite you at some point (usually when you can least afford it to happen). It's the Murphy factor.

Network Nail hit on head.....

RTM - yep it would appear that you have it and I feel like my rear has been well and truly bitten. Thx for pointing out the wood for the trees !

You MIGHT get away with bringing the server down to single user and loading that patch. If that doesn't work, then a rebuild or restore. That's if it will even boot once you take it down. This might be one time you might try going from multi-user to single user without going down to the ok prompt. If the patch install package (or tar file) is on the server, then you have a chance of being able to install it possibly.

Nothing says this will work but it may be worth a shot.
