connecting to unix through hyper terminal - as a dumb terminal

I just changed from windows NT to XP and I am no longer able
to connect to my unix system. I used to use hyper terminal -- which acts as dumb terminal to my main frame unix system. I think one of the options used to be "direct to comX". This option isn't listed now. I use a serial port and the computer does recognize this as a com port. I use a direct connection. I called microsoft tech support and they didn't understand this concept and tried several things but were unable to help me. Does anyone know if I my com port configured incorrectly or do I need special drivers.

The computer talks to my com port however I don't think it knows I have a direct connection or cable in my serial port.

Thanks for any help anyone may have.

I'm a bit confused...

Can you verify my understanding of your problem...

1. You are physically connected directly to your UNIX
machine via a cable attached to your PC's serial port.
I assume you have a NULL Modem attached?

2. You are NOT using TCP/IP (dialing out to the Internet
via a modem).

3. You can no longer connect to your PC's COM port
using Hyper-Terminal.

Please let me know if these assumptions are correct
before we proceed further.

Possible Alternatives

I never liked Hyper-Terminal for use as a video terminal (e.g. vt100). I would look into something like Tera Term if you can't get Hyper-Terminal to work. http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html. I have yet to try it with XP but it seems to work fine for me on 2000.

You might also want to try to see if you can get a copy of the old MS DOS program Telix working under XP.
