Linux chat with other users

Besides talk and write are there any other good programs for talking to a particular user on the same Linux system.

There are many "server" style protocols like IRC and XMPP that work well on Linux. Now, those sorts of things mean that you "login" so to speak into the server in order to "talk". Just some other options to consider.
