Hey, I was kind of expecting a mod to move the discussion - in any case I think further discussion along these lines should take place in a new thread. It'll be easy to find.

Corona: Obviously we don't see eye to eye but I hope you're enjoying the discussion all the same.

You're not bothering me, I don't have to talk to you if I don't want to. Honestly, sometimes I like a good argument.

Still think you're missing something but you'll figure it out.

style guide shell programming, or the attempt of guidance and unification

ksh & ksh93 - are my most favourite shells.

especially ksh93 and its testing, substitution, pattern matching and that like enhancements as well as its programming features.

currently i am writing a style guide for shell programming, designed for our standard company shell - which is defined to be the korn shell (ksh93).
this peace of work, once being released ...
shall become obligatory to all shell scripts and their programmers.

the poblems why i thought of a such guide were
- usage of antiquated mechanisms, which are fork- / exec-bombs and overdue since things were significantly changed in the last 18 years (..!) ;
- another is the unification of a common style - because every programmer did it how he or she thought the best way was - so no common style,
on the contrary - each programmer is a style
- propagating builtins etc.
- korn shell internal mechanisms
- and more similar propagations

but even that the standard house shell here is declared, releasing this work is still very hard and not possible !
the idea of a guide for general applliance still has to be fight strongly through, through the sensitivities and traditions and beloved shells and all what is holy for most of the people...
and of course a guide what is going to tell people how they shall program
their scripts, for to make things more efficient and also platform wide unique designed - in the first place just kicks in windows and doors and heads - not intentionally, but regrettably..

i can tell you - this struggle is sometimes similar to the discussions here, rather than always productive, its stamped most of the time by individual arbitrariness, and the love for self presentation / expression ..

must have something to do with humans in general, because watching from this perspective, world peace and balance between all the nations etc.
fail most likely because of the same 'backgrounds' ..

zsh
But I think only because of its interactive possibilities, especially for its multiline editor. I almost do not use an external editor when writing short and not so short scripts.
It has several goodies as a programming language too (ways to work with arrays, parameter expansion, shell expansion) but unfortunately they are not portable (neither with POSIX nor with ksh or bash).
