awk: division by zero
I received error "awk: division by zero" while executing the following statement.

SunOS 5.10 Generic_142900-15 sun4us sparc FJSV,GPUZC-M

Code:
echo 8 | awk 'END {printf ("%d\n",NR/$1 + 0.5);}' file1.lst
awk: division by zero

Can someone provide solution?

Not sure what exactly you are trying to do here.
awk action is being executed in END block, when all input lines are processed.
In END block, there is no input line to process, so $1 is zero/null. So "division by zero" error.
Following should work.

echo 8 | awk '{printf ("%d\n",NR/$1 + 0.5);}'

what are you trying to do?
why are you echo-ing into awk AND passing the input file 'file1.lst'?
NOTE: on Solaris, use /usr/bin/nawk or /usr/xpg4/bin/awk - instead of plain old 'awk'

I am trying to total number of lines divided by 8.

not all awk-s have 'NR' available in the 'END' block.
