The column of ps you're interested in is RSS, or "resident set size". This measures only pages that actually exist and are paged in.

Let's tie this down a bit.

What Operating System and version do you have?
What version of Oracle are you using?

Because Oracle makes extensive use of Shared Memory segments and most modern versions of unix use paged memory it is remarkably difficult to find out how much memory Oracle is using. The Oracle installation manuals are very good on the subject of configuring unix and Oracle for a given memory size. It is very important to know your Oracle Database Block Size because many Oracle startup parameters are in units of Blocks.

You can find out a lot from Oracle itself.

For example to find out about the System Global Area with sqlplus:
Code:
select *  from v$sgastat;
