How to find who installed an app

Hi, how could I find whether an application is installed by root or non-root

I am assuming it would be logged in a file, if it is where would it be?

Thanks in advance.

not necessarily. Most apps are installed with no record of who installed them and no record of when they were installed.

Other than the date stamps of the files. That is of course you are intalling them from a CD. If it is just a tarball. they may keep the same date stamps/permissions that they were tarred with.

It would help greatly if you can post your OS and h/w versions so we can tell you what commands to use to find out what is loaded on your system.

Some apps can be installed w/o having root access these might have the ID of the person that installed them, but I doubt it.

If you are the root administrator, check the log in /var/log/messages.

Sometimes there is some clue in there to find who might install the Software.
