Today (Saturday) We will make some minor tuning adjustments to MySQL.

You may experience 2 up to 10 seconds "glitch time" when we restart MySQL. We expect to make these adjustments around 1AM Eastern Daylight Saving Time (EDT) US.

I rather suspect that one of the listed kernel modules is not part of the LTS distro, and should be updated for the new kernel.
This system has 8GB of RAM. Would you elaborate on modules not part of the LTS? how do I find and update (or delete, if not needed) them?

*You* should know best what you have installed!
Maybe dpkg --list gives a clue?
Maybe post your problem in an Ubuntu forum? Via Google I have seen several reported instabilities in Ubuntu 16.

I followed advise to disable multithreading in BIOS and it did help, system has been running for couple of weeks without any lockups.
