I'm trying to hook up a Ubuntu 10.04 PC to my media box by Samba and I am getting can not connect errors although I can see the directories. I have done everything I can think of to enable sharing and guest access. Can anyone think of anything to try such as restoring defaults and trying again? Has anyone else had any issues?
There seem to be a few log files in the /var/log/samba directory/
/var/log/samba/log.smbd is empty
Log by IP address of the offending device (log.IP) when I just tried now (can someone please let me know if it is safe to publish details of my system like this):

Interestingly, ls -lat reveals files by modification time and shows cat log.winbindd-idmap (but nothing up to 13:20, so just before the connection attempt?)

No other files in /var/log/samba have been modified today.
There have been new entries in /var/log/messages today (on another note, thankfully, the pulseaudio log filling issues plaguing Ubuntu a few months back seem to have been resolved).

The first thought that comes to mind is that there may be an issue with permissions.
For example, what is causing this message?

Permission problem?
OBTW: Welcome to the forums from our new Tapatalk mobile application!
Thanks! Tapatalk is the way of the future for forums on the run. Permissions you say? You mean directory permissions? I can list out the directory permissions if that helps.

Problem is now on the media box (Mediagate Linux based media player) I can now see my server (named according to Ubuntu PC name) and navigate to 'test', whereupon I am presented with a log in screen and no amount of restarts of either device or samba will get me past 'log in error!'.
Is there any simple way to set up Samba in Ubuntu 10.04?
I have tried purging Samba according to these instructions
And now I am one step further than I was a few weeks ago (could not connect) - btw I am trying to share a NTFS folder.
Have done the smbpsswd -a and -e thing, have added <user> to smbusers, have added a share and I have created the linked Unix user, have synced the passwords, have run testparm with errors, and I can see the directory, but I get log in error when I try to get to it.
Any suggestions? At least I am getting this far which is a good thing.
Should I do another purge according to the instructions above, hope for the best again?

The problem I'm having is that if I spec a user id (valid user) in the share, I don't get prompted for a password when trying to access it from a Windows host. If however in the share options I spec a group name (ie. valid user = @aiswf), I get prompted for an account and password. The user... (0 Replies)
