How to check at which drive root FS is?

Dear Gurus,

Could you please help me?
After problems with power supply, our server was done. While trying to boot it with "boot" command, I am getting message:

Code:
{3} ok boot
Boot device: /pci@8,600000/SUNW,qlc@2/fp@0,0/disk@w5000cca0043b59fd,0 File and args:
Boot load failed.
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
{3} ok

As I understand, I have problem with bootblk and I need to install bootblk with

Code:
installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/cXtXdXsX

But the problem is - how to find disk where root file system is (cXtXdXsX)?
Unfortunatelly, I cant to find out how to do this...

P.S. I have V890 server.

Thanks in advance...

1. Boot from CD
2. Mount each slice under /a or /mnt
3. Check if that filesystem has root directories like /etc or /platform

Hi, thanks for the answer.

When I am trying to do

Code:
mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /a

I am getting message

Code:
mount: /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 is already mounted or /a is busy

"Mount each slice under /a or /mnt" you mean all slices which I can see in output of the format command or in output of ls -l of /dev/dsk directory?
Since format giving me following output:

Code:
# format
Searching for disks...done

Most likely it is one of the "s0" slices, so just try mounting c1t0d0s0, c1t1d0s0, c1t2d0s0, c1t3d0s0.

Hi nypreH,

Boot the system from cdrom in single user mode:

Code:
ok> boot cdrom -s
# cd /

If you are not sure what your boot-device is, run format to list the disks in the system.

Code:
# format
Searching for disks...done

AVAILABLE DISK SELECTIONS:

      0. c1t0d0 <SUN36G cyl 24620 alt 2 hd 27 sec 107>
         /pci@1f,700000/scsi@2/sd@0,0
      1. c1t1d0 <SUN36G cyl 24620 alt 2 hd 27 sec 107>
         /pci@1f,700000/scsi@2/sd@1,0

 Specify disk (enter its number):

Hit control-D to exit. Based on the above output, we'll assume c1t0d0 is our boot-device.

Perform a sanity check on slice 0 and verfiy the ufs type:

Code:
# fstyp /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0
ufs

Mount the filesystem read-only:

Code:
# mount -o ro /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 /a

Verify it is indeed the boot disk by looking at the contents of /a

Code:
# ls -l /a

[output truncated]

If your output looks like this, you can assume it is your boot-device.

Next: Inspect your vfstab

Code:
# cat /a/etc/vfstab

Look for the line that has a single '/' in the third column.
It looks like the following -
/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0 / ufs 1 no -

Then you can go ahead and unmount the filesystem again, and run fsck to ensure the filesystem is in a clean state:

Code:
# cd /

# umount /a

# fsck -F ufs -y /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0

Now it's safe to mount the filesystem in read-write mode:

Code:
# mount -o rw /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 /a

Now copy the bootblock back to the disk:

Code:
# /usr/sbin/installboot /a/usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0

Once this is done, reboot:

Code:
# reboot

SUNADMIN, thanks very much, i performed steps you mentioned and was able to boot... But the problem is that when I made init 0, inserted back fiber optic cables (to attach storages) and made boot again, I got same error:

Code:
{3} ok boot
Boot device: /pci@8,600000/SUNW,qlc@2/fp@0,0/disk@w5000cca0043b59fd,0 File and args:
Boot load failed.
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
{3} ok

So, as I understand - changes wasn't saved... could you please help me to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Roman

Hi,
It seems that your boot device is not set correctly, it is trying to boot from the external device
(/pci@8,600000/SUNW,qlc@2/fp@0,0/disk@w5000cca0043b59fd,0).

Get the server down to OBP i.e. ok prompt -

# init 0

Then follow the steps below-

ok>devalias

Note down the full path for disk0 i.e. c1t0d0s0

That will be something like
"/pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@8/disk@1,0:a"

ok> printenv boot-device
ok> setenv boot-device?
/pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@8/disk@1,0:a net
ok> printenv boot-device
ok> setenv auto-boot? false
ok> reset-all

After resetting, it will come to ok prompt again
