/var/adm/messages file rotation

I have a solaris 10 machine, lately I had a drive error issue so the dmesg command would show a screen full, now that the drive issue is resolved I want to have a fresh start for my #dmesg command output.

The root cron looks like this
Quote:
root@myserver /var/spool/cron/crontabs $ more root
#ident "@(#)root 1.21 04/03/23 SMI"
#
# The root crontab should be used to perform accounting data collection.
#
#
10 3 * * * /usr/sbin/logadm
15 3 * * 0 /usr/lib/fs/nfs/nfsfind
30 3 * * * [ -x /usr/lib/gss/gsscred_clean ] && /usr/lib/gss/gsscred_clean
The /etc/logadm.conf file has this entry
Quote:
/var/adm/messages -C 4 -P 'Sun Aug 23 01:10:00 2009' -a 'kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslog.pid`'
If I manually run /usr/sbin/logadm this wont rotate the log file.
What am I missing?
Please advise.
Thanks

You didnt specify any criteria which should cause rotation.

Check out the -p (rotating after a specific period) or the -s (rotating based on a specific size) options.

/var/adm/messages vs /var/log/messages

The /var/adm/messages in Solaris seem to log more system messages/errors compared to /var/log/messages in Linux. I checked the log level in Linux and they seem OK. Is there any other log file that contains the messages or is it just that Linux doesn't log great many things? (2 Replies)
