simple modem setup question from new comer

How do you adjust the volume on a modem internally. I know there is a setting to turn off the speaker during handshake and leave it on while dialing. Could someone help me please?

Usually, this can be done with the AT commands of your modem. Check the manual (unfortunately, my modem days are long ago so I don't know anymore what the 'standard' command was - well, maybe not unfortunately *g*)

If you are using a Hayes-compatible modem (with the AT* command set), this may help, depending on what you want.
If you want to change volume, use ATL#, where "#" is: 0 for low-volume, 1 is for slightly higher volume, 2 is medium, and 4 is high-volume.
To switch the speaker on and off, ATM# would be used, where "#" is: 0 for speaker off, 1 to turn the speaker on until it detects a carrier (usually used by default), 2 always keep the speaker on while the modem is off hook, or 3 to turn the speaker on until the carrier is detected, except for when actually dialing the number.

From what I understand, you just want to hear the dial, and nothing else (negotiation, etc...). I don't think this is possible for almost all modem, but I'm not sure.
