Shell Programming and Scripting

Hi,

I have to write a shell script that converts numbers in to words
below is what i wrote.My script is not running.

num=echo $n | cut -c i

case num in
0) echo -n "zero " ;;
1) echo -n "one " ;;

4) echo -n "four " ;;
5) echo -n "five " ;;
6) echo -n "six " ;;
7) echo -n "seven " ;;
8) echo -n "eight " ;;
9) echo -n "nine " ;;

done

But i ma gettimng the following error

number in words :
sam.sh: syntax error at line 6: `(' unexpected

Any help?
why i am getting the error in for loop line?

Don't use the for loop...Try using other loops...

Is this homework?
