Question programming in C, formatting output ?!

dear coders,
i need some inspiration again...
there is something what i always wanted to know... how to code following:

Code:
value 1: __________
value 2: __________

important: when my "script" starts the display has to be cleared and two lines are shown (see above), the cursor has to be positioned above first underscore in first line. when i start to write username, the underscore(s) has(have) to remain there! when i hit enter or tab, the cursor is positioned above the first underscore in the second line.
ideally the chain of underscores will look like a line Smilie

how would the C code look?
will i have to use ncurses?

kind regards

If you have it you could simply use whiptail or dialog in a shell script.

to be honest, it doesn't help me in any way.
