one good one, not totally for networks is A+ cert. For networks, microsoft certified system enginner is good, but that also covers other parts of microsoft windows.

Please don't boo me, I am an MCSE (I was young and I needed the money). To save face, I am also Sun certified and a Unix geek at heart. After getting my MCSE I quickly realized the MCSE will only prepare you for a Microsoft world, and barely at that. I found most of the Microsoft classes (for NT 4.0) are almost more propaganda for Microsoft then teaching real world scenarios.

In the real world I have found the most knowledgable network engineers tend to have Cisco certifications + a few years experience. That does not mean you will not learn from other courses. There are many courses, including some from Microsoft, which you can learn a good deal, but Cisco really packs it in.

Personally, I got the most useful network training from two classes I took in college when I got my BS in CS. If you have a local university, you may want to see if they offer networking classes. Often these will cost about the same as a vendor class but give you 10x the info.
