$var -ne ${var} why?

hi there,

i read man sh(1) and tried to understand the difference between $var and ${var}, but i'm still unsure. when do we use one and when do we use the other? i need an example Smilie

In a case like:
letter=A
title="${letter}system"

We want to create a variable called title which has the value "Asystem". But without the braces the shell will think we have a variable called "lettersystem".

The /var/adm/messages in Solaris seem to log more system messages/errors compared to /var/log/messages in Linux. I checked the log level in Linux and they seem OK. Is there any other log file that contains the messages or is it just that Linux doesn't log great many things? (2 Replies)
