Help with finding files

Ok, here it is:

I have a system that logs certain files every day. Every time a new day dawns, the system will create a folder with the name that is respective to the day's date (12-06-07) and start putting new files in that folder.

I have another system that needs these files. I am going to:

1. Connect to the remote system using FTP
2. Change Directory to directory that has the files

HOW CAN I:

1. Have the script automatically search the new folder that is created each day?

I'm assuming there will have to be some variable in there like '$date=today' or something that will tell the script to look for these files.

Help.

I can think of three approaches:
  • The script that creates the new folder each day could also update a symlink (call it 'today' or something). Your ftp script would then always look for this symlink instead of calculating the folder name. That also gives you some safety if the new folder hasn't been created yet when you run your search.
  • Adjust your FTP script to first run the date command with the appropriate +format commandline to get the date in the form you need.
  • Run the ftp using expect or perl to allow you to use it inetractivly, then run a 'dir -tr <dir name wildcard>'' to grab all the folders sorted with the newest last and grab the last listing to get the latest folder created. Change into this folder and carry on as usual
