I'm trying to teach myself associative arrays in AWK but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the concept.

Can someone help me with this issue? I have lines that look like this:

company1-sdp access-list logging rate-limited or missed 65 packets
company1-sdp access-list logging rate-limited or missed 388 packets
company2-sdp access-list logging rate-limited or missed 192 packets
company2-sdp access-list logging rate-limited or missed 65 packets

I want to calculate the total missed packets for each company. So output would be:

company2-sdp access-list logging rate-limited or missed 257 packets

I have code started, but I don't think it would be useful as I'm on the wrong path I'm pretty sure.

Any help is appriciated, thanks.

Very nice vgersh. I guess I was way overthinking it.

I have been reading quite a bit on awk, but my knowledge is very basic. Where did you reference the number (packets?)

I can assume that arr[$1] is putting the company names into an array, then the value is NF-1 (second to last field on the line?) Then, for each element of the array (each company name) it prints the line (with the common part being static)... what's the %d doing? then the i, arr[i] is a bit confusing.

'%s' in the 'format' portion of 'printf' corresponds to the FIRST argument (i),
'%d' corresponds to the SECOND argument (arr[i]).
look into 'man awk' and 'man -s 3C printf' - this is pretty much basic C.
