Printing the output of a gzip command intact

how can i get the printf command or the echo command to print the data that are inbetween the first and the last quotes?

Not sure what you are trying to achieve, but the surest way to print inline characters without worries about special characters or quotes is a "quoted here-document" (notice the double quotes around the text "EOF") .

Try:
Code:
cat << "EOF"
^_<8b>^H^@U<8c>MX^@^Cí=ÙzÚH<97>×ð^Teìn<8c>Ób_<9d><9f>dXd<9b>^N^F7<82>8qâÎ'^K^Y^T<83>D<90>°M^Lý^Hó^Fs5w3ß|s5/ÐýbS%©<84>^DBH ;Æ<91>ºíà¢Î©:{-§T»;<91>+<8e><8f><88>]ÿîü^C^@Õ*R¥Få¬Y©×@<91><®Ô^@X¨¶»ë/tX^*sC<96><91><84>áøÃ<87>üÞ<83>±hêç®Á'@|^G<81>ù¯>|<98>^FÀ%<98>Là÷;<80>h^C<93>

Suppose i wanted to perform a function on the output, would that be possible?
