Egrep with special character?
how do i egrep set of characters ?

egrep -iwF "id|the|*"

throws following excption

egrep can use only egrep pattern syntax


I want to egrep the string along with (*) special character

Drop the F option. Probably not supported by the version of egrep.

-F does not work with egrep.
egrep is like grep -E and grep -F is like fgrep - that explains the error message.
-F (plain strings) and -E (extended regular expression) are mutually exclusive.

Try to use grep -E instead of egrep.
Try to use grep -F instead of fgrep.
Both, egrep and fgrep are deprecated.

grep uses regular expressions. * does not mean wildcard, * means 'zero or more of the previous character'.

Decimal value for special character

I am seeing an special character in my file when i do the cat filename | od-bc I see a value of 376 for that special character. I would like to find the decimal value for the character. For example the decimal value for ctrl-Y is char(25). Appreciate help on this. (11 Replies)
