Replace special characters with backslash and character


I have a string wherein i need to replace special characters with backslash and that character.
If my string is

then the new string should be

depends on what you define as special.

This will escape any non-alphanum,hyphen or underscore:

$ echo 'qwerty123@!,' | sed 's/[^[:alnum:]_-]/\\&/g'

By special i mean all characters except 0-9, A-Z and a-z.

I have a shell script that I have written to be a kind of to-do/notepad that's quickly executable from the command line. However, special characters tend to break it pretty well.
