Check the man pages of cron and crontab. To actually explain how cron works will be complicated.

please check the crobtab menu to add the crontab entry the explation is more or less like this
#1st field: minute (0-59),
#2nd field: hour (0-23),
#3rd field: day of the month (1-31),
#4th field: month of the year (1-12),
#5th field: day of the week (0-6 with 0=Sunday).
#6th field: Script to start

on example

00 17 * * 3 /home/test.sh

This shell script run 17th hour, every day(since there is a * ), every month ( since there is a * ), 3rd day ( which is wednesday )

Check the menu of crontab whether the cron file is there in your system.
