Compare fields in two files

Hi,

I am trying to check two files based on certain string and field.

Code:
cat f1
source=\GREP\"
hi this \\
source=\SED\"
skdmsmd
dnksdns
source=\PERL\"

Code:
cat f2
source=\SED\"
source=\GREP\"
vlamskds
amdksk m
source=\AWK\"
awk \here\"
dksnd sknk

Code:
awk -F'\' 'NR==FNR && /source/ {a[$2];next} /source/{for(i in a) if($2~i) print i}' f1 f2

i get desired output:
Code:
SED
GREP

Code:
awk -F'\' 'NR==FNR && /source/ {a[$2];next} /source/{for(i in a) if($2!~i) print i}' f1 f2

I get incorrect output:
Code:
PERL
GREP
PERL
SED
PERL
SED
GREP

Expected output:
Code:
PERL

If i swap the files , i want to get
Code:
AWK

as a output.

Try:
Code:
awk -F'\' 'NR==FNR && /source/ {a[$2];next} /source/ && !($2 in a){print $2}' f1 f2

Also I would rewrite the first condition so that the second condition is never reached while processing f1.
Code:
awk -F'\' 'NR==FNR {if (/source/) a[$2]; next} /source/ && !($2 in a) {print $2}' f1 f2

It does an efficient lookup in the associative (contents-addressed) array.
It's an implicit if; in a { } context it would be: if (!($2 in a))
Even if the first script seems to work it should be coded the same way ... left as an exercise!

Ouch. Yes. I just realized I haven't had lunch yet. It is time to take a break for a while. Smilie
