Oracle How to trim file size from 800MB to 400MB?

Hi

I have log file size of 800MB on solaris machine which has all log transactions. My requirement is how to reduce the file size from 800MB to 400MB. Note: It doesn't matter it should have logs but log file must be 400MB.

Please provide corect syntax.

start with truncate ?

Take backup first and see if this is what you wanted ?

Code:
cp logfile backup_logfile
truncate -s 20K logfile

Above one will keep a file size of 20K for logfile . I had original size of 40K.

Do you want to blindly truncate the file? If so, consult the dd manual page, paying particular attention to the of and seek operands.

However, I suspect that your problem statement neglects to mention important details. If it is a log file, then you probably want truncation to occur at a message boundary, so that you aren't left with an incomplete entry. Further, it makes sense to assume that you want to discard the oldest entries, preserving the newest.

If my suspicions are correct, you should confirm them. And if so, is there anything else that we have not been told?

Regards,
Alister
