Scripting Help needed
Hi folks,
need a small help
lets say i have a text file with the following content:
 
james
tom
jack
spielberg

i want to append text to the beginning of each line with a variable(lets says FirNameSmilie and i want to combine all the names with a space in between and store it in another variable,so that i can use that varible later code.
var = FirName:james FirName:tom FirName:jack FirName:spielberg

Appreciate your time and help.

Insert as the first line,

header=first_name

awk -v h=$header 'BEGIN {print h} {print $0}' file

or

sed "1i\
$header" file

including another part,

awk -v h=$header 'BEGIN {print h} {print $0; x=(x)?x" "h":"$0:h":"$0}END {print x}' file

I tried both commands with no luck.

it says Illegal variable name.

It is Sun solaris OS and shell is tcsh.

If you have a choice and if csh or tcsh is not really needed for your doings, do yourself a favour use bash or ksh instead.
