Hi, I'm running a program (Python) whose output I would like to redirect to a log. But the program calls a library (that I cannot change), which outputs all sorts of useless information.

I would like to redirect all output from my Python program into this log, except output that matches the useless information (for example, all useless information may begin with the word "STRING").

Right now, I call:

nohup ./program.py >> program.log 2>> program.log &

I tried piping ./program.py to grep -v, but this didn't work

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Did you try something like this?

nohup ./program.py 2>&1 | grep -v ^STRING >> program.log &

Just tried it. It doesn't print anything to the file.

Can you show us the example of good and bad lines?

Sure. Output that I want to keep could be anything. But for example, this is the first text printed to stdout:

The stuff that I do not want is output from a camera driver, written in C, that is converted to Python (using a 3rd-party program). Each line (and given the way my programs are structured, there are hundreds) begins like this:

APOGEE.DLL - CApnCamera::

I don't think there is a "non-verbose" option to supply to this camera driver; it just prints every command in the background (to stdout/stderr).

Note, it runs in a thread, if that may affect it. In which case, this is probably the wrong category for this post...

Do you get any output if you run it without redirecting to file?:

No, no output. Nor do I get any from just:

nohup ./program.py

But, of course, I do get output from ./program.py.
