displaying an image - BOURNE SHELL

i am new to bourne shell, and i am making this program that checks if any .bmp files exist in the current directory, then if it does, it displays the image...

please help!!

For that, you would have to be in X... So check the env variable DISPLAY is set or set it correctly then it will depend with what application you will open to view it

try this # setenv DISPLAY hostname(or)ipaddress:0.0

Lots of missing info in the question. The other comments assume you are using a shell via some kind of X client app... or at least a shell that can access and use an X server with an X client graphics viewer, but there is another possibility... it could be a shell running on a tty with some kind of other graphics capability. One popular example might be a Linux vc with frame buffer graphics support... in which case, there are frame buffer viewer (just an example).

Regardless, it is safe so say that the bourne shell requires an application to "view" a graphic file.
