Getting PID from filename
Hi,

Any idea the shortest way to get the PID of the filename?

Code:
T201108221033_P001736.Sep_5_1457.csv

The sample pid is 1736, but it could be 5 or 6 digits depends on process count.

if all your filenames are in this pattern as your example, take a look the test and output below:

 echo "T201108221033_P001736.Sep_5_1457.csv" |awk -F'[P.]' '{print $2}'
001736

if you don't want the leading zeros:

kent$  echo "T201108221033_P001736.Sep_5_1457.csv" |awk -F'[P.]' '{print $2*1}'
1736

Thanks working, anyway i have to replace "awk" with "nawk". not sure why it was not working on Solaris 10

On Solaris, awk is a very old version and you generally should use nawk if you can.
