Shell Programming and Scripting

So this is what I'm trying to do:

I have a file called registry.txt which has a list of registry entries I want to search for.

I have another file called inctrl.txt on which I want to perform the search on.

Here's the example contents of registry.txt

SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center

Here's the example contents of inctrl.txt

Code:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify!=dword:0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Wondows\WindowsUpdate\DoNotAllowxps2!=dword:0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Policies\Explorer!=dword:0

Here's the script which is supposed to do the searching.

#!/bin/bash

IN=inctrl.txt
REG=registry.txt

exec < ${REG}
while read LINE
do 
    egrep -i ${LINE} ${IN}
done

The desired output should be:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify!=dword:0

But I'm not able to get the job done. I think it has to do with escaping the characters before grepping, but I just can't figure out the right combination.

Can someone please help me?

No need for a loop or for re-reading inctrl.txt over and over and over again. Just tell grep to read the text to match from registry.txt with the -f switch. And since you aren't using regular expressions, it's safest to specify fixed string matching with -F.

grep -Ff registry.txt inctrl.txt

Just out of curiosity....How do you get it right in the do while loop ?

-F, as mentioned. That tells it to interpret the pattern as a string instead of a regex. But the 'right' way would be to use the features of the program.
