Alternative Scripting Language for UNIX/Linux System Administration

I do not know UNIX shell scripting so as an alternative which language would you think is better for daily System Administration tasks. Perl or PHP? I know a little about both.

I use PHP for most daily sys-admin tasks.

The choice between Perl or PHP is personal, both are great! I used to program in Perl, but swiched to PHP for these types of tasks. I guess the reason is that it is easy for me to integrate PHP into web-based apps, the forums, word press, and other Internet apps.

PHP makes a very good general purpose scripting language and does not have to be used for just web based applications.

On the other hand, Perl is a great choice as well. So is Python. I just happen to like PHP these days!

Among the languages being discussed, perl would be my choice. But I feel that a system administrator must know shell programming. You will be at a disadvantage unless you learn shell. So that is my suggestion to you...learn shell scripting first.

Hi.

To apply the Unix philosophy effectively, you'll need more than
just C in your toolkit. You'll need to learn how to use some of
Unix's other languages (especially the scripting languages), and
how to be comfortable mixing multiple languages in specialist
roles within large program systems.
