replace text with SED

I hope someone can help me out with the following:

I have a file with the following lines in it:
something [something] /path/dir/my_-_file.01.ext sometext sometext
somethingelse [something] /path/dir/my_-_file.02.ext sometext
something [somethingelse] /path/dir/my_-_file.03.ext sometext some other text

And i want to replace this with:
something [something] /path/dir sometext sometext
somethingelse [something] /path/dir sometext
something [somethingelse] /path/dir sometext some other text

So basically what i am trying to do is strip the complete filename from a path

I am very new to sed and read the man pages, googled for a solution, but can't seem to find the right syntax to use.

Something like this?
sed 's#/[^ /]* # #' file

Thnx it works!

My test script:
echo "/dir/file_-_name.01.ext" | sed 's/\/[^/]*.ext//g'

've been messing around with this for a couple of hours, you just saved my day!
