I had tried it with vi and didn't find a space.

ok I understood what do you mean. the case is if the last comma have sapces after it.

When I redirect the output to a file, I do find spaces after the comma in vi:

:set list                                                                                                                            1,1           All

Yes, that was a feature for me, as things like excel and access were quite happy to fill in the blanks for me. When a line goes to just white space and separators, it just counts them in case something shows up before linefeed, so it would be easy enough to make that an optional behavior. I use my own simple arg parser, not optarg:
