Help me on Grep Command

Hi,

Can anybody explain me about the below mentioned code.

Code:
grep "^[0-9]" $FILENAME | cut -c 1-8,84- | awk '{ if (!($2+$3)) printf $1 "," }' >$TEMP_FILENAME

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.
grep "^[0-9]" $FILENAME: extracts from $FILENAME all lines starting with a digit.

cut -c 1-8,84- : extracts from char 1 to 8 and from 84 to the end from output generated by grep

awk '{ if (!($2+$3)) printf $1 "," }' If the sum of the 2nd and 3rd field == 0 then print first field.

>$TEMP_FILENAME redirect output from preceding commands into $TEMP_FILENAME

Just by looking at the code, it is possible to optimize. Post sample input file if you are interested.

I'll try:
Code:
grep "^[0-9]" $FILENAME | \ # From a file, print only those lines
                                        # starting with a digit
cut -c 1-8,84- | \ # From those lines, print only
                                        # characters 1 through 8, and from 84 to
                                        # the end
awk '{ if (!($2+$3)) printf $1 "," }' \ # If the sum of the second and third
                                        # field of the line (seperated by
                                        # whitespace) is 0, print the first
                                        # field, followed by a colon
>$TEMP_FILENAME # Finally, write everything to a
                                        # temporary file
