Hi everybody, I'd like to ask for some help with the following:
I've got a file named FILE1 with the following lines (8 fileds in total):
Rightrs1 a b c d e f g
Rightrs2 a b d v g f r
Rightrs3 g h t j f d a
Rightrs4 a f d e r t y
What I need to do is to create a new file including only rs1,rs2 etc from first field, then add a new filed and then print only the 8th filed. The final file should look like this:
rs1 newFiled g
rs2 newFiled r
rs3 newFiled a
rs4 newFiled y
The newFiled should be a number from 1 till as many as many entries are there in the file (e.g. if there are 1000 lines in the old file, then the newFiled should be numbers from 1 to 1000)
Unfortunatelly, it's way more than I have ever done in Unix. So, I'm really sorry, but I've got no script that would at least approximatelly resemble what I need to do.
Sorry, I will post one of my non-working scripts!
I do apologize!

Oh, I need to rephrase a bit the task:
the are several original files named Pattern1_right_sorted, Pattern2_right_sorted etc and I also need a filed saying the number of the pattern, so the new file should look like this:
number of the pattern (e.g.1) rs1 newFiled g
number of the pattern (e.g. 2) rs2 newField r etc
Here's my non-working script:
Unfortunatelly, this one doesn't work and doesn't add afield of rs1 rs2 etc
Sorry I'm not able to write a better script...

Reason: code tags, PLEASE!
Many thanks, Majormark!
Sorry, but it's not what I need. My explanation is not the best...
Newfield is meant to symbolize the number of a sequence from 1 till the number of lines in a starting file...
To keep the forums high quality for all users, please take the time to format your posts correctly.
First of all, use Code Tags when you post any code or data samples so others can easily read your code. You can easily do this by highlighting your code and then clicking on the # in the editing menu. (You can also type code tags
and
by hand.)
Second, avoid adding color or different fonts and font size to your posts. Selective use of color to highlight a single word or phrase can be useful at times, but using color, in general, makes the forums harder to read, especially bright colors like red.
Third, be careful when you cut-and-paste, edit any odd characters and make sure all links are working property.
I'm new to utilities like socat and netcat and I'm not clear if they will do what I need.
I have a "compileDeployStartWebServer.sh" script and a "StartBrowser.sh" script that are started by emacs/elisp at the same time in two different processes.
