In ksh, you can read a comma separated file like this:
IFS=,
while read field1 field2 field3 ; do

done
In ksh, you can crack the first character off a field like this:
rest=${field#?}
firstchar=${field%${rest}}
In ksh, you can ensure that the above operation automatically converts the first character to lower case by putting the following line in your script near the top:
typeset -l firstchar
