this was a simple case of rtfm. you are right. i was suppose to start mysql.server and copy the appropriate .cnf file to /etc/my.cnf.

we initially screwed up the hotpsares when we set it up. we did'nt assign enough inodes to the hotspares. so, we had to newfs it again to assign more inodes. :D
