why not use ufw - Uncomplicated Firewall, which does all the hard work for u.

I would use ufw - Uncomplicated Firewall on ubuntu. its very easy to use.

As far as i understand it is still a IMPLICIT deny

If its a clean install you dont need to worry to much about the last OS installed , be sure to format the disk. As your using Linux an older laptop would be perfect as it does not need the same...

do you have 2 network cards in the server? maybe your not plugged into eth0

you could share with extra rights for the user.

use virtual-clonedrive to mount the drive then your can install on some spare space on your hard drive in a duel boot or use it as a virtula install
