Why would I suspect the name server if the sun box isn't even producing a DNS query. I would 100% agree if I could see a dns query from the sun box and the nt box wasn't responding...

Good idea, I used Network Monitor which is part of the SMS package for NT. There isn't any dns queries coming out of the sun box, so I would be inclined to thinks it's something...

Found the problem to be in the sendmail.cf configuration file.

The "Local Domain Name" section was incorrectly defined.

No network lag I am able to telnet to the other smtp server that resides on the same subnet.

I have tried hitting enter, only to get:
500 Command unrecognized

Once the banner appears...

When I telnet to my smtp server (port 25) it takes almost 30 seconds for the banner to appear.

I have checked and the server isn't busy (at least from what I can tell)

Any ideas?

Well here is what i found:

NSLOOKUP

Well I've been able to use nslookup and query the DNS server successfully. (even able to query domain names outside of our domain)

Any ideas why

ping proxy1.compassgroup.com doesn't work?

Thanks, I have setup both the resolv.conf and nsswitch.conf files.

but I cant ping anything using a FQDN for a node on our local net. I have confirmed the DNS record exists on the DNS server.
