The hang at checking security database indicates a problem with /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow generally. The 2 files should both have entries matching for users.

Are you attempting a cold boot? Full power down between attempts?

Yes from a cold boot. Right now it just gets stuck on fpu.......

Since everything was working before I would suspect that one of the boot files got corrupted at the time the system died. You'll find out for certain when you do a reload of the OS.

I hope you are correct in expecting the replacement CDs and floppies to arrive Tuesday.
